kcwc day five - vintage high yoke charmer for Ms G

Last night I worked on Ms G's vintage dress that had been sitting in the "work in progess" pile for about one year. The original plan was to have the 3 munchkins dressed in the same fabric for baby D's dedication in church. I had the amount of fabric needed for 1 dress, 1 jumper and 1 pair of bloomer/shorts (I had intended to make something for me out of this fabric, actually, but changed my mind....)

I cut all three, finished the jumper, and by the time I was halfway through the dress, baby D outgrew the size I had cut his bloomers! I ended up putting the dress away unfinished and Tuca wore his jumper throughout the season.

But better late than never! Without further ado:

                                             

 

I also made this headband. It's vintage cluny lace that I dyed and stitched to grosgrain ribbon . It ties in a bow.

I thought you might want to see the jumper, too :) So here is Tuca last fall, happily waiting for the Mister to take him to his first day of preschool.

But this year, baby D took ownership of it. All I have left of this fabric is a strip about 6 inches wide, but I better whip something up or Tuca will be left out, now that Baby and Ms G have matching outfits.

And I ended up not having time to work on the upcycle. That will come next!

Vintage dress - Mail order pattern 4638

Taking advantage of the rising temperature and the flowers making everything around here a bit prettier, I'm interrupting the upcycling series (sort of...) to show off my new dress.

 
I got this mail order pattern from Etsy, it was complete with the instructions

And it's sort of an upcycle, too, because the fabric for the bodice was a bedsheet! :D You'd never guess, right? I certainly hope not! THe fabric for the skirt was also thrifted - it's a heavy knit material that has an orange thread on the weft that picks up the orange in the flowers, unfortunately it's hard to see from the pics.

I loved this pattern and hope to get to it again, after I finish the many projects I have lined up. I think it would look lovely with a full skirt.

Upcycling!

Here are a couple of super simple dresses that I upcycled.

This one was an XXL man's shirt that I got at a church rummage sale. It looked new and the material felt nice. I intended to make something for the boys with it, but then changed my mind.

 

I cut off the sleeves, pinned the sides to remove excess fabric and serged all the way up to the armhole, then finished the armhole. I love how it turned out, because it can be worn in all seasons, with sandals or boots, with or without a belt. Very versatile! The pocket was on the chest originally, I moved it and added a strip of satin ricrac just for a little feminine touch.

This one was a blouse I got at the thrift store, and I had planned to make something for Ms G with it, but also changed my mind - think twice, cut once ;)

I did the same I did for the other dress, but this blouse had 3/4 length sleeves, which I put away for some other project. The problem with upcycling is the fine line between hoarding and "making provision for the future"..... ahem.
